PROJECT1
Invisible Set Extension 1(Pre_Production)

I chose Star Wars as my film reference because many scenes in "Star Wars" are highly expressive in terms of composition, perspective and light and shadow design. In addition, the world view of "Star Wars" integrates various real-world architectural styles. For example, the planet Corusanne showcases dense super high-rise urban buildings. This style mixture provides rich visual resources.

Ideation 1:
Upper and Lower City

My first idea was to present a two-layered world with a split top and bottom: the upper part is a grand futuristic city made up of huge, simplified geometries, with architectural form inspired by the visual style of the Star Wars city of Corusanne (Coruscant), emphasizing verticality, height, and coldness. The lower level is a settlement of traditional windmills and villages, representing the primitive, natural and even forgotten old civilization.

Ideation 2:Three Realms City

My second idea is to depict a three-story future city suspended in the air. In the middle is a huge hemispherical urban agglomeration, and above and below are groups of buildings in the shape of rings or flying saucers. This design is inspired by the structures of aerial platforms such as "Cloud City" in "Star Wars", and incorporates dense urban textures and dark tones to create a highly industrialized futuristic feel.

Ideation 3:Inside the suspended city

My third idea was the interior buildings of the suspended city. The buildings were so dense that it was almost impossible for light to penetrate. Pipes, cabins and pontoon Bridges crisscrossed, filled with technical devices and mechanical symbols. This density brings about a sense of isolation and oppression, suggesting that people feel oppressed, alienated and anxious in the technological utopia.

Mr. Kannan thought that my sketches 2 and 3 could be explored further, but Mr. Kannan suggested that I change the sketches to a horizontal composition. Besides, I should also consider and study the scenery I want to draw from multiple perspectives.

Fig1.10 The revised horizontal composition (Sketch 2)

After that, I also attempted to study the perspective relationship between the architecture and the scenery and summarize it with simple forms.

The following is the perspective and composition of my exploration from the standpoint of the city

This week we need to do the photobashing practice. I have chosen the high-rise buildings of project1.

Fig1.13 photobashing practice 1

Besides, I also attempted to practice photobashing practice from different perspectives.

Fig1.14 photobashing practice 2 (Look out of the window in the building)

Fig1.15  photobashing practice 3(Look slightly upwards from the ground)

This week, we continue with the task of project1. Mr. Kannan believes that my first two photos of bashing can proceed further, especially the second one. Highlights can be added and, most importantly, the foreground, middle background and background can be distinguished.

So, I chose to appropriately increase the highlights. At the same time, by strengthening the color contrast of the buildings on the left to make them look closer, the colors of the buildings above were appropriately weakened compared to those below, and finally the background was blurred to make them look farther away.

Regarding the modification of Project 1, I followed Mr. Kannan's suggestions, expanded the idea of Project 1, added some urban agglomerations and special buildings, and added some light and shadow and highlights.

Mr. Kannan gave feedback on my project 1. I can select one of the second and third extensions for fine production, which includes highlighting and modifying the shape of the building, etc. So I chose the third expansion chart for improvement.

Compared with the previous Invisible Extension Set (Trial)3, I refined the overall light and shadow in the fine production, such as the brightness of the illuminated surface of the building. Besides, I followed Mr. Canan's advice and appropriately added some Windows to the building. In the background, some small spaceships have been added to make it more in line with the overall atmosphere.

I deepened some highlights of the building again and appropriately added some white colors representing glass on the building, making it look more appropriate.

FEEDBACK
week4
You can choose one between Sketch 2 and Sketch 3. I prefer Sketch 2, but the picture should be in a 6:9 horizontal composition and should be adjusted.
week 6
You can appropriately add some highlights to the building, and at the same time pay attention to distinguishing the foreground, middle ground and background.
week7
There is no need to attach the previous content to the weekly slides. Otherwise, there would be too much content. Regarding your Project 1, you already have an overall outline. Now expand it, for example, by adding some urban buildings to it.
week8
You can choose one of the second or third expansions to continue improving. I suggest the third one. You can improve in these aspects. For example, the shape of the building can be more sci-fi, and the light and shadow effects of the building need to be more obvious.
week9
The light reflected on the building doesn't seem very obvious. Deepen it. Also, you can add some white to the glass on the building. This might be better.

REFLECTION
Experience
In the Digital Matte Painting Project 1, I experienced a complete visual creation process from the initial conception stage, to the subsequent sketching, perspective research, photobashing practice, and finally to the detail adjustment. This process has exercised my abilities in composition, spatial design and artistic expression, and has also made me more familiar with how to effectively integrate reference materials into my own creations.

Observation
During the production process, I gradually realized that the proportional relationship between different architectural structures, the gradation of light and shadow, and the warmth and coolness of colors have particularly crucial influences on the depth and realism of the picture. Especially after Mr. Kannan pointed out that the distinction between the front, middle and long shots needed to be strengthened, I made the picture layers more distinct by adjusting the brightness, color and blur, etc. Furthermore, I also observed the diversity of urban structures in "Star Wars" and its influence on the shaping of the atmosphere, providing me with rich visual references.

Findings
In this project, I found that to create a good digital landscape painting, apart from technical operation, what's more important is how to arrange the spatial relationship and layers of the picture. For instance, the distinction between the foreground, middle ground and background will directly affect the realism of the picture. Besides, I also realized that when architectural elements are too dense, it is easy to make the picture appear chaotic. Therefore, it is very important to leave appropriate blank space and highlight the key points. Through continuous attempts and modifications, I have gained a deeper understanding of the overall control of the picture.
