1.Fresh Guacamole

Animation screenshot

What I like about this short film is that it is presented in a minimalist animation style and uses a variety of unexpected materials to build the ingredients, such as ping-pong balls, toys and small objects. Every step of the production is presented in a clever way that makes my eyes shine.

2. Tokri

Animation screenshot

Tokri tells a story about relationships between people, often dealing with themes of family, friendship, or tradition. Animation may be symbolized by a simple object (such as a basket), carrying emotions and memories, making me feel the deep connection between people.
One of the things that struck me the most was its emotional depth, showing deep emotional bonds through the interactions between the characters, such as love between family members, support between friends, or nostalgia for loss.

3.UMBRELLA

"UMBRELLA" revolves around the themes of loneliness, protection, and relationships. The story uses an umbrella as a symbol to convey the emotion of seeking protection and warmth in a difficult situation.
In my opinion, the story uses the umbrella as a symbolic prop, an important prop that carries the emotions of the characters, can symbolize protection, warmth and shelter, and at the same time express a desire to seek refuge in difficult times.

Week 7
Our team was asked to shoot two stop-motion animations, clay animation and paper-cut animation. I thought I was not good at making clay, so I chose paper-cut animation.

In the preparation stage of shooting, our team bought enough materials to make the characters and backgrounds needed for the paper cutting. Then we collected the paper cutting and prepared to shoot.

During the shooting process, we encountered a lot of trouble, such as some parts of the paper cut is too small to run everywhere. Fortunately, however, the results are more satisfactory.

Week 8
During the independent learning week, my team member LIN ZHI YUAN and I discussed the preliminary task allocation of the final project, and finally we decided to shoot a stop-motion animation about the protection of Marine ecological environment.

Below is our brief synopsis and the reference for making animations.

Week 9
In this week's class, Mr Martin showed us two ways to make stop-motion animation, namely Pr and Ae, and showed us the detailed operation process.

Week 9 Slides

I chose to use Ae to make my stop-motion animation, but I ran into trouble during the production process. When I followed Mr Martin's tutorial, I found that my pictures could not be imported into the sequence. Then I consulted Mr Martin and finally found that the format of the photos was wrong.

The photo format is HEIC instead of JPEG

Fortunately, I successfully solved the problem under the guidance of my husband and completed the production of two stop-motion short films.

In addition to completing the above tasks, my team member Lin Zhiyuan and I continued to push forward our final project, and had a second discussion after class, and finally determined the storyboard of stop-motion animation.

Week10
In today's class, Mr. Martin showed us a video called VFX, which is mainly about how to make a video of a hand bouncing figure. This part is a little complicated, so Mr. Martin demonstrated it several times and recorded the screen.

Production process

During the production process, I worked step by step according to the video recording sent by Mr. Martin. There were some problems in the step of matting the characters, but the final result was good.

Week11
At the end of the 11th week of classes. My partner Lin Zhiyuan and I decided to shoot stop-motion pictures.
Before shooting, we cut the paper cutting elements into the shape we want.

Week12
In this week's group work, we worked together to complete the editing task of stop-motion animation.
As for the process of video editing, I think there are still quite a few challenges. We first thought of using Adobe AE for video editing, but during the production process, some photos often become large and the video looks very weird.

After that, we decided to use Adobe Pr to make stop-motion videos.

After importing the photos I took, I chose to modify some parameters of the preferences to suit my stop-motion animation.

Adjust the “Media” option

Adjust “timeline” options

However, after importing the photos, I noticed that some of the photos were still growing larger or smaller in the animation, so I tried to adjust the zoom size using the “effects control”.

resize

After that, I select all the photos and click on the nested option to make it a whole sequence.

Then, adjust the duration of the sequence and the playback speed.

When this is done, I import the audio prepared in advance and try to cut out a suitable piece of audio using the “razor” tool.

Reflection
This stop-motion animation production revolves around the theme of "whales are polluted by garbage and die". I chose stop-motion animation as a special form of expression, trying to vividly present the story of whales and the ocean through frame by frame changes. The whole process was full of challenges, but it also brought me a lot of new harvest.

In the pre-planning phase, I spent a lot of time on script development and storyboard design. I hope to convey the harm of Marine pollution to the audience through simple pictures and smooth narratives.

Stop-motion animation is achieved by shooting frame by frame, which requires the movement of objects in each frame to be very subtle and precise. However, in the actual shooting process, the props, background and light in the scene are easy to move slightly, which leads to the incoherence of the picture, which brings great challenges to the shooting. For example, in the process of moving the whale model, sometimes accidentally deviated from the original track, and it needs to be adjusted and re-shot repeatedly.

Despite many difficulties during the production process, I felt extremely satisfied and proud when the animation was finally completed. This experiment gave me a deep understanding of the charm of stop-motion animation, and also taught me how to better plan and execute a creative project.
