Visual Analysis

Fig2.1:
Design by :Graziano Locatelli
Year: 1995, 2012
Dimensions: 124 x 140 cm

Fig 2.2: Selected artwork with annotations

Observation

In Fig 2.2, there is a white tile wall with a figure in the middle that looks like it is about to emerge from the wall. The figure was wrapped in something like a cloth, and the details of his face could not be seen clearly, which felt mysterious and a little depressing. The whole posture is like a cross, arms outstretched, body forward, as if trying to break through the limits of the wall.

Analysis

1.Symmetrical Balance

The general shape of the figures in the fig 2.2 is close to the left and right symmetry (similar to the cross), giving people a sense of stability.  The broken tiles are also relatively evenly distributed on the left and right sides, although not completely symmetrical, but still maintain a visual balance.  This symmetrical structure makes the picture not appear too chaotic, but more orderly, and enhances the audience's attention concentration.

2. Texture and material(Emphasis  principle)

In fig 2.2,the smooth tile surfaces and broken edges form a strong visual impact, symbolizing order and destruction, bondage and escape. The broken bricks make the work more dynamic, and the audience seems to feel the power of the characters when they break through the wall.

3.Dynamic and guided vision(Movement)

In fig 2.2,cracks in the wall and falling tiles spread to all sides, giving the impression that the picture is moving, guiding the viewer's eye outward from the center.

The arms of the figure are spread out, and the cracks are radial. This design makes people feel the release and impact of power.

Interpretation

1. Limit and break

In fig 2.2,the tiles represent rules, order and social rules, while the characters break through the walls and rush out, symbolizing the individual's resistance to restrictions. This limitation can be real life stress, or it can be inner anxiety and fear. This work shows a strong desire to break through barriers, get rid of constraints, and pursue freedom.

2. Real-world metaphors

The fig 2.2 may be alluding to the powerlessness of individuals in modern society, depicting people struggling to survive despite being trapped by institutional, technological or social pressures. It can also symbolize some kind of emotional trauma, such as depression, anxiety, or the search for self-identity-that is, the "real self" wanting to break through the socially imposed cloak.

Sketch
Since what I mainly feel in this work is a feeling of breaking free from bondage and shackles, and I am eager to pursue new freedom, so I take this point as the main design idea in the sketch.

Fig 3.3: Sketch1

Through strong contrast (black and white and color), balanced composition and the guiding line symbolized by fingers and other design principles, this sketch depicts a desire to break free from bondage and restriction, as well as the emotion of longing for freedom and light. The design focuses on breaking free from bondage and transformation, and uses the contrast between black and white and color to express the conflict between repression and freedom. It symbolizes the leap from self to new life.

Fig 3.6: Sketch2

This sketch uses design principles such as asymmetrical balance, and the design revolves around "the bondage that has not been completely broken". The giant hand symbolizes the existence that is trying to break free, but still cannot completely get rid of the bondage. The puppet is a kind of emotional longing for freedom (by manipulating the puppet with both hands to express their desire for freedom, because the puppet can make any movement).

Fig 3.8:The production process of sketch 3

Fig 3.9: Sketch3

Through the design principles of emphasis and contrast, this sketch mainly shows the feeling of the bound person who wants to break free. The broken glass represents that he has broken free, but the bandages on his face still show that he has not been completely liberated, and the sun and the distant crowd depicted by his fingers represent the actual beautiful longing of the protagonist's heart.

Feedback
Week4
GeneralFeedback:
In addition to adding the selected picture, you also need to perform visual analysis in the picture.
Specific Feedback:
In the visual analysis of this picture, it is not obvious that the design principle of contrast needs to be replaced.

Week5
GeneralFeedback:
Modify fonts and citation formatting, and the process of making sketches that should be pasted into your blog.
Specific Feedback:
The fig referenced by the picture should be changed to Fig, with a colon after the picture number, and the visual reference of the sketch should be specific to the visual reference of the sketch.

Reflections

Experience
This assignment taught me that deep observation can help me understand art better, organized thinking can make me speak more clearly, and using visual language properly can make my works more easily resonate with others. At the same time, the final sketch production is actually a process of sorting and deepening understanding, adding their own views can make the sketch more personalized and in-depth. These challenges have also improved my ability in design, analysis and presentation.
Observation
In short, when I analyze and sketch, I find that I like to start with shapes and materials and slowly build up the logic of the picture. In my work, symmetry and fragmentation are in sharp contrast, and the change of materials (such as from tile to glass) makes the visual effect more striking. Also, when choosing colors, I prefer to use contrast, such as deepening shadows in broken areas to make the impact more intense.
Findings
While doing the analysis, I noticed that the appearance of the crack can directly affect a person's mood. For example, pointed cracks make people feel nervous, and round holes look more natural and soft. Also, when I was making sketches and experimenting with different colors, I found that color is not only used to look good, it can also convey the main mood of the work. For example, using cool colors can make the picture feel more depressing, while warm colors may reduce the impact of the work. These discoveries make me pay more attention to the relationship between various elements when creating, and make my works more visually and emotionally layered and expressive.
