Development & Design
Here are the artworks I selected for Task 1:

Fig2.1:Name of design work:broken
Design by :Graziano Locatelli
Year: 1995, 2012
Dimensions: 124 x 140 cm

1.Sketch summary

Fig2.2:Sketch1 in task2

Fig2.3:Sketch2 in task2

Fig2.4:Sketch3 in task2

Sketch 1: The left side represents a bound figure, the right side represents a free and liberated figure, and the outstretched arms of the two represent a sense of longing for freedom and liberation.
Sketch 2: Giant hands outstretched in a broken plane, manipulating a puppet without self-awareness.
Sketch 3: Under the missing corner of the glass is a face wrapped in bandages, while the complete part is the beautiful scenery outside the window. The protagonist uses his fingers to describe the scene he desires on the glass.

Among the three sketches, I think sketch 3 has more profound meaning, and the contents in the picture can better explain the activities of the protagonist's inner world. So I chose sketch 3.

2.Work progress

Line art
When it comes to drawing lines, I choose to use procreat as my painting tool and use the "studio brush" in it to operate. The main thing is to refine the rough lines of the sketch.

Coloring progress

First of all, I filled each area with color. Since I prefer to highlight the contrast of colors, I chose to use cool dark colors as the main tone, while other parts were bright and warm colors as the main tone.

Fig2.9:Color the background

After completing the basic color filling, I started to divide the area for further detail and secondary color filling.

I divided them into three parts to refine, respectively, the border, the character and the background, the first detail is the border.

Then comes the refinement of the characters.

Finally, it is the refinement of the background. In order to make the background not rob the main body of the characters, I treat the background as a color block.

Fig2.14:Treat the background as a color block (local image)

For the arms in the lower part of the background, I chose to create a feeling behind the glass, so the colors are fuzzy and light. To achieve this effect, I adjusted the transparency of the glass layer and the brush to fill in the color.

Final Outcome of Task 3

Fig2.17:Final Outcome of Task 3
<Liu Cheng Rui_Reshaping boundary_Task 3>

The painting expresses a longing for freedom and a struggle to break free. The glass symbolizes isolation and confinement, while the bandaged character represents the person in bondage. The warm world outside the glass is in sharp contrast to the cold inside, highlighting the conflict between reality and hope. The figure in the painting stares out through the cracks and leaves simple pictures on the glass with his fingers, symbolizing the yearning for freedom, belonging and a better life, but also implying the hope of breaking through the shackles.

Fig2.18:"Reshaping boundary"analysis

In this art work, I use the design principles of emphasis, contrast, and symbol.
Emphasis: The center of gravity is placed on the figure in the lower right corner, the figure is shaped more than other places, and the color is also the deepest place in the whole work.
Contrast: The color contrast between the character and the background, the background is bright and warm, and the character is dark and cool.
Symbols: The graffiti symbols in the background (sun and family) symbolize the protagonist's desire for freedom and warmth.

Feedback
Week6
GeneralFeedback:
The sketch should be individual, not put together, because there are many details in the sketch that people can see.
Specific Feedback:
The outline of the design is fun to draw, but don't talk about the outline in the progressive progress of the work, but also understand the meaning and content of what you want to express.
Week7
GeneralFeedback:
You should mark which one is your final sketch, and then there are some problems with the perspective of the character's eyes that need to be modified. The final thing is to add the final reflection after the reflection.
Specific Feedback:
Your character is behind glass, so his two eyes should be looking at the landscape in front, and your right eye is not looking right and should be modified.

Reflections
Experience
I've learned a lot about drawing with procreate, especially with the "Studio Brush" tool, which is extremely stable and helps me draw the character's outline in finer detail. I paid special attention to the flow of lines and details to make the whole picture look more layered. Then I tried and tried on the background, and finally decided to use color blocking and adjusting the transparency to make the background look a little hazy, like the world behind the glass. This approach not only makes the main character stand out, but also makes the whole picture feel more complete.
Observation
The composition of this work follows the principle of "emphasis". Through the position of the main character, the contrast of light and shadow and the use of color, the audience can quickly focus on the core theme. At the same time, I use "contrast" to show the difference between warm and cold worlds, and through "balance" to ensure that the whole picture does not appear too messy. And the work "Reshaping Boundaries" expresses the contradiction between being bound and longing for freedom. This theme is also very common in real life, each of us is more or less limited by some invisible boundaries, and the process of breaking through these boundaries is the process of our continuous growth.
Findings
I have three sketches, each telling a different story about wanting to be free, feeling led by others, and wanting to live a better life. In the end, I chose the third picture because it looked more powerful and showed what was in the heart of the main character more clearly. Also, when I was painting, I noticed that the contrast between cool colors and warm colors can express emotions very well. Cool colors make people feel lonely, warm colors are like a symbol of hope and freedom. This contrast in color not only makes the picture look good, but also the key to expressing the emotion of the work.
